In this lecture, Ben Kelly covers key projects produced by Ben Kelly Design (BKD) between 1977 and 2009. He also shows his independent work, produced out of the office and without the interference of clients; some of this made in collaboration with others and some produced as solo work. The ‘International Orange’ of the lecture title comes from a colour reference for a specific range of paints. When BKD were employed on projects in Manchester for Factory Records and Tony Wilson, the founder and manager of The Haçienda nightclub, they always specified International Orange for each job. Shortly before Tony Wilson died in 2007 he told Ben that the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco was painted International Orange. Ben decided to dedicate his 2008 Kingston University exhibition to the memory of Tony Wilson and to title the exhibition International Orange. Hosted by GSA’s School of Design An award-winning Interior Design practice based in London, BKD was founded in the mid-1970s by principal Ben Kelly. Initially working within the fields of retail and leisure, BKD built their reputation producing high-profile and innovative spaces, including Manchester’s legendary night-club The Haçienda.
